According to the Hengqin Border Inspection Station, as of 1 p.m. on May 7, the number of inbound and outbound travelers passing through Hengqin Port this year has surpassed 10 million, marking a 32% year-on-year increase. This milestone was reached 46 days earlier than last year, setting a new record for the fastest time to hit the 10-million mark since the port opened.

Statistics show that more than 6.9 million of those travelers were from the Chinese mainland, up 22% year-on-year, making it the primary driver behind the surge in traffic. The port has seen multiple single-day passenger records, particularly on weekends and public holidays, with the highest daily volume recorded on May 2, reaching 128,000 travelers.

“Compared to the past, the clearance speed has improved by at least 70% thanks to the new in-vehicle inspection hall,” said Mr. Chen, a Macao resident now living in Hengqin.

Since last year, the port has rolled out 30 integrated one-stop vehicle lanes and inspection halls for in-vehicle passengers, significantly easing cross-border commuting for Hong Kong and Macao residents. Over 2.77 million Hong Kong and Macao residents have crossed through Hengqin Port this year, representing a 60% increase compared to the same period last year.

China's visa-free policy has expanded steadily since last year, attracting more foreign travelers to visit the Chinese mainland via Hengqin Port. Data shows that more than 130,000 foreign travelers have been processed at Hengqin Port this year, a 73% year-on-year increase.

New policies such as Macao tour group permits and multiple-entry permits have been implemented. The number of travelers using these permits has exceeded 88,000 and 170,000, respectively.

To ensure smooth and safe customs clearance for people and vehicles, the Hengqin Border Inspection Station has upgraded the inspection equipment, opened temporary lanes during peak periods, established dedicated lanes for schoolchildren, and introduced frequent traveler lanes for Macao residents and cross-border workers.
